What to wear for a professional headshot

Colours, necklines and fits that photograph well, plus what to avoid, for corporate, creative and casual headshots.

Clothes take up a surprising amount of a headshot. The right outfit makes your face the focus. The wrong one becomes the first thing people notice.

Choose solid, mid-tone colours

Navy, charcoal, soft grey, deep green, burgundy and muted blues flatter most skin tones and look good at small sizes. Pure white and pure black can lose detail, especially next to a white or dark background.

Avoid busy patterns and logos

Thin stripes and small checks can create a shimmering effect on screens. Large logos and slogans pull attention from your face. If you love pattern, keep it subtle and large-scale.

Match the outfit to your field

  • Corporate, law, finance: a tailored blazer or suit, simple shirt or blouse.
  • Tech and startups: a smart jacket over a plain tee or an open-collar shirt.
  • Creative work: your own style, as long as it stays clean and uncluttered.
  • Healthcare and education: smart and approachable, or your professional uniform.

Fit and neckline matter more than price

A well-fitting, freshly pressed piece looks better than an expensive one that pulls or wrinkles. Necklines that frame the face, such as open collars and V-necks, work well in a head-and-shoulders crop.

Keep accessories simple

Small earrings, a watch or a simple necklace are fine. Large, shiny jewellery reflects light and distracts from your face.
